What happened on April 1 in Chandigarh?

A hand grenade was hurled outside the BJP’s Punjab office in Sector 37, Chandigarh, around 5 pm on Wednesday, April 1. The explosive landed near the main gate of the BJP headquarters and caused damage to parked vehicles, but no casualties were reported. CCTV footage showed two suspects arriving on a motorcycle, with one seen pulling the pin and throwing the grenade before both fled towards Mohali. Babbar Khalsa International claimed responsibility for the attack.

Has the case been solved?

Yes. The Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police, in a joint operation with Chandigarh Police, claims to have solved the case within days, arresting five individuals and identifying the two main perpetrators behind the attack.

Who has been arrested?

The five arrested are: Balwinder Lal alias Shami of Majari village, Nawanshahr; Jasvir Singh alias Jassi of Bharapur village, Nawanshahr; Charanjit Singh alias Channi of Sujawalpur village, Nawanshahr; Rubal Chauhan of Thana village in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh; and Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma of Dhuri, Sangrur.

Who actually threw the grenade?

The two key perpetrators who carried out the attack have been identified as Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh. Both are currently absconding and joint police teams are conducting raids to apprehend them.

What is the ISI connection?

Police claim preliminary investigations reveal the terror module had backing from Pakistan’s ISI, with foreign-based handlers operating from Portugal and Germany. Acting on the directions of a Portugal-based handler identified as Baljot Singh alias Jot, the accused coordinated the delivery and execution of the attack.

How was the grenade smuggled in?

Initial investigation established that a China-made P-86 hand grenade was used, smuggled from Pakistan via drone. The accused had transported a consignment containing hand grenades, arms and cartridges, which was circulated through multiple operatives before being handed over to the final perpetrators.

What has been recovered?

Police recovered one hand grenade and one .30 bore Zigana pistol along with ammunition from the accused.

What did DGP Gaurav Yadav say?

“Foreign-based handlers in Portugal and Germany have been identified. Multiple cutouts and sub-modules were used. This operation has effectively foiled a major terror conspiracy aimed at disrupting peace and harmony in the region,” said Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav today.

 Is the NIA involved?

The National Investigation Agency had inspected the blast site soon after the attack. NIA’s role in the ongoing investigation has not been formally defined yet.

The BJP office grenade attack was not an isolated incident — in the days leading up to April 1, Chandigarh had witnessed three separate shootings in less than a week, raising serious questions about law and order in the Union Territory.
