Gajab Raat Characters Explained: Where All Are Corrupt Except One

Gajab Raat characters explained: Ajay, Divya Dutta’s Suneeta Chaudhary, the CBI and NIA claimants, and the Med News editor who betrays journalist Arya Sahni.
Gajab Raat, Manoj Bajpayee’s Netflix thriller (previously titled Ghooskhor Pandat before a title row took it to the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court), unfolds over a single night in Delhi. What makes the film work isn’t just its plot — it’s that almost every character carries their own private corruption, their own price. Here’s a character-by-character look at who’s compromised, who isn’t, and how that one honest person changes everything.
Gajab Raat Characters Explained: The corrupt, one by one:
- Ajay Nirvit (Manoj Bajpayee) — the corrupt cop at the centre. A Delhi Police inspector known for taking bribes and talking his way out of trouble, Ajay opens the film firmly on the wrong side of the law he’s meant to enforce — a man who’s made peace with compromise as a way of life.
- Suneeta Chaudhary (Divya Dutta) — the politician pulling the real strings. Effectively functioning as the city’s top political authority in the story, Suneeta is revealed to be at the centre of a scheme with international pharma executives — engineering a vaccine shortage and a fresh pandemic scare to drive prices up, with payoffs moved through offshore accounts. She’s not a side villain; she’s the architect.
- Suneeta’s aide, Sabharwal — the fixer. Acting on Suneeta’s behalf, Sabharwal is the one who receives the tip-off on journalist Arya Sahni’s return flight from Poland and sets the night’s violence in motion by passing it along to have her intercepted.
- The Med News editor — the real betrayal. This is the twist that gives the film its moral spine: Arya’s own editor, the person she trusted with her story about the manufactured-pandemic conspiracy, is the one who tips off Suneeta’s side about her flight back to India — effectively handing his own reporter over to the people she was investigating, almost certainly for a payoff of his own.
- The man claiming to be CBI (Akshay Oberoi) — enforcement with an agenda. He turns up at the scene claiming CBI jurisdiction over the case, but his real job is darker: he’s the one who waylays Arya, abducts her, and tortures her to extract the chip holding the footage of Suneeta sealing the pandemic deal.
- The man claiming to be NIA (Saqib Saleem) — a second agency muscling in. He shows up right alongside the CBI claim, demanding control of the same case — two federal agencies fighting over one injured woman is itself the film’s signal that something bigger, and dirtier, is being protected.
- The local cop/colleague (Rajiv Gupta) — corruption with a laugh track. Playing off Ajay with comic banter, he represents the everyday, almost casual version of the same culture of graft — corruption so normalised it’s practically a running joke between colleagues.
The one exception: Arya Sahni, the journalist
Gajab Raat Characters Explained: A reporter for Med News, Arya is the only character in the story who isn’t compromised — she risks everything chasing a story about powerful people engineering a public health crisis for profit, and she’s betrayed not by a stranger but by her own editor for it. Her footage, hidden on a chip, becomes the one piece of truth every corrupt character in the story is trying to bury or control.
And then, the turn…
Gajab Raat Characters Explained: It’s Arya’s courage — chasing the story even once it turns dangerous, trusted by no one but herself — that becomes the thing Ajay can’t walk away from. Over the course of the night, protecting her and the truth she uncovered becomes the act that cracks open his own conscience, and the film’s central question — whether a man who’s spent his life taking the easy, compromised path can still choose otherwise when it actually costs him something — plays out through what he decides to do with her.
