The cap on how many mobile connections you can hold isn’t new — the enforcement around it is. Here’s what to know, and what to check today.
Is this a new rule?
No. The 9-SIM cap (6 in J&K, Assam and the North-East) has existed for over a decade. What’s new from August 24 is that operators must now actively check and enforce it before issuing a connection.
How will operators know I’ve hit my limit?
Through DoT’s Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), which pools subscriber records from every telecom company. From August 23, DIP also carries a photo-match feature, so someone can be flagged even while applying with a different operator or in a different circle.
Will my existing SIMs stop working?
No. The rule blocks new connections for people already at the limit — it doesn’t touch SIMs you already hold. Telecom operators have until November 30 to fully integrate the checking system.
What happens if I’m issued a SIM over the limit by mistake?
It can be suspended for a day until the issue is resolved, under the Customer Application Form (CAF) terms you sign at purchase.
