Punjab and Haryana Deliver: Lovepreet Singh's Games-Record Silver, Seema's Comeback Bronze
Amritsar’s Lovepreet Singh sets a Games record en route to silver, while Haryana’s Seema completes an injury comeback with discus bronze at Glasgow 2026.

Two of North India’s own delivered on the same Games — one setting a record on the lifting platform, the other completing a three-year comeback from injury on the throwing circle.
Lovepreet Singh: 388kg to a Games Record
Lovepreet Singh gave India its eighth weightlifting medal of Glasgow 2026, taking silver in the Men’s +110kg final with a total of 388kg — opening with a Commonwealth Games record 176kg snatch before adding 212kg in clean and jerk.
Lovepreet Singh Started at 13
The Amritsar-born lifter’s rise has been built on patience rather than a single breakthrough moment. Raised in Bal Sachandar village, he started lifting at 13, inspired by local weightlifters training nearby.
He joined the Sports Authority of India’s camp at NS NIS Patiala in 2017, climbing steadily through junior ranks and shifting weight categories as international rules changed around him. Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship gold and a Birmingham 2022 bronze came in the same year; a personal-best 386kg total at this year’s Asian Championships arrived just months before Glasgow. His silver here — with a Games record attached — is the highest point yet of that long climb.
Seema: A Three-Year Injury, Answered with Bronze

In the Women’s Discus Throw final, Seema completed a comeback few would have bet on. The Bhiwani, Haryana thrower — who trains at SAI’s NCOE Patiala while pursuing a Ph.D. in Physical Education — won bronze with a best throw of 58.65m.
Seema’s career was derailed by a serious knee injury that kept her out of competition for more than three years, the kind of setback that ends careers rather than pauses them. She returned anyway, rebuilding through rehabilitation to reclaim her place among India’s top discus throwers — capped by gold at the 2026 South Asian Athletics Championships and a personal-best 59.73m earlier this season that punched her Glasgow ticket. A Commonwealth Games medal, on the biggest stage she’s competed on since her injury, is the payoff.
Her NCOE Patiala training-mate Nidhi Rani finished agonisingly close to a medal of her own, placing 4th with a throw of 57.10m.
Between a record-breaking lift in Amritsar’s honour and a hard-fought comeback for Bhiwani, it was a day North India’s sporting patch had every reason to celebrate.
