Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins in Jind at 11 am, moves to Chandigarh by early afternoon, and closes the day in Jalandhar on July 17 — flagging off India’s first hydrogen train and inaugurating projects worth close to Rs 25,000 crore across health, rail, road and culture.

11 am | Jind, Haryana — the marquee event

PM Modi in Punjab, Haryana: Modi flags off India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train on the Jind-Sonipat route at Jind railway station: the 10-coach train, built with indigenous technology, running on hydrogen fuel cells that emit only water vapour. By 11:30 am he moves to Eklavya Stadium to launch and dedicate roughly Rs 14,700 crore worth of Haryana projects and address a public rally.

The bulk of that figure sits in road infrastructure: Packages 1-5 of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway (157.92 km, ~Rs 9,680 crore), the Ambala-Kala Amb Highway linking Haryana to Himachal Pradesh, the Jind-Gohana Greenfield Highway (cutting the journey from nearly two hours to about 40 minutes), and the foundation stone for a Hansi-Barwala Highway upgrade.

On rail, he dedicates the Kurukshetra Elevated Railway Track. On healthcare, two new medical colleges go live — Pandit Neki Ram Sharma Government Medical College in Bhiwani, and Maharishi Chyawan Medical College with Rao Tula Ram Hospital in Narnaul. He also lays the foundation stone for a Sikh Museum in Kurukshetra covering Sikh history and Gurus’ teachings.

This is Modi’s first Jind visit in nearly 12 years — his last rally here was October 2014 — and the Jat-dominated district is widely read as a Haryana bellwether, with the visit seen as an early marker ahead of Punjab’s 2027 assembly polls.

1:45 pm | Chandigarh — over Rs 4,700 crore

PM Modi in Punjab, Haryana: At PGIMER, Modi inaugurates the Advanced Mother and Child Centre (300 beds) and the Advanced Neurosciences Centre, and lays the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Block under PM-ABHIM. On education, he opens a boys’ hostel and mess at Punjab Engineering College and a hostel block at Government College, Sector 46, and lays the foundation for a Research Scholars’ Hostel at PEC.

On roads: the IT City-Kurali six-lane Greenfield Highway opens, and the PR-7 Spur of the Ambala-Chandigarh Greenfield Highway — improving Aerocity access while bypassing Zirakpur — gets its foundation stone.

Jalandhar, Punjab — over Rs 5,470 crore

PM Modi in Punjab, Haryana: Modi’s second Jalandhar visit this year (after February’s Dera Sachkhand Ballan trip) covers 75 redeveloped Amrit Bharat stations across 20 states (~Rs 1,570 crore), four of them in Punjab — Jalandhar Cantonment, Mohali, Sri Muktsar Sahib and Sri Anandpur Sahib. He opens the Daulatpur Chowk-Kartoli rail line connecting Punjab to Himachal Pradesh, and flags off two new services: Kartoli-Ambala, and Amritsar (Chheharta)-Varanasi, linking two major pilgrimage circuits.

On highways: Package 6 of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway opens, and the Southern Ludhiana Bypass gets its foundation stone, aimed at easing congestion and freight movement between Ludhiana and Bathinda.

Security is tight: DGP Gaurav Yadav reviewed arrangements at Jalandhar Cantonment station Thursday, and a no-flying zone is in place for the visit.

Punjab 2027 Polls

The visit lands squarely ahead of the 2027 Punjab polls, where the BJP is positioning itself as a standalone contender rather than a coalition partner. Punjab BJP chief Kewal Singh Dhillon has already framed the Jalandhar station redevelopments as part of Modi’s larger vision for the state. Expect the messaging on July 17 to lean heavily on connectivity and healthcare delivery as proof points, even as the political subtext — Punjab 2027 — sits just beneath the surface.
