Chandigarh, June 14

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini declared the film tax-free Saturday after attending a special screening in Chandigarh alongside Kangana Ranaut, who is both the film’s lead actress and a BJP MP from Mandi. The announcement has renewed interest in the film, which released just three days ago on June 12.

Here is everything you need to know about it.

Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata — which translates to Dispenser of India’s Destiny — is a 2026 Hindi-language thriller based on true events during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, but with a focus most 26/11 films have never explored.

Rather than centring on the attackers, the police operation, or political fallout, the film is set almost entirely inside Mumbai’s Cama and Albless Hospital on the night of November 26, 2008 — one of the buildings targeted by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists Ajmal Kasab and Abu Ismail.

Kangana plays nurse Gita Madhav Gandhare — a character inspired by real-life nursing officer Anjali Kulthe, who helped save 20 pregnant women and dozens of patients by shutting the hospital gates, switching off lights, and keeping staff calm through the night as gunfire rang outside.

The film’s central argument is that on that night, it was not just soldiers and police who stood between terror and life — it was ward boys, lift operators, cleaners, security guards, and nurses who collectively kept around 400 people alive.

The ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’ movie is written and directed by Manoj Tapadia. Kangana Ranaut is also a co-producer. It is presented by Pen Studios. The ensemble cast includes Girija Oak, Smita Tambe, Prasad Oak, Aditya Mishra, Zahid Khan, and Rasika Agashe among others. Runtime is 2 hours 7 minutes. Certificate: UA16+.

Critics have broadly praised the Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata movie, particularly for its performances. ABP Live gave it 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a long-overdue tribute to healthcare workers. Firstpost also gave it 4 out of 5 stars, praising its decision to foreground hope and humanity over spectacle. Bollywood Hungama described it as a film with a compelling story and sincere performances, though noted some weakness in storytelling.

Box office numbers from Day 1 suggest modest returns — the film is not expected to be a commercial blockbuster — but political patronage from BJP-ruled states is providing an organised push.

Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata movie: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared the film tax-free earlier this week, calling on every citizen to watch it. Haryana has now followed. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari attended the Mumbai premiere and praised the film’s portrayal of nurses at Cama Hospital. The pattern mirrors what happened with The Sabarmati Report in 2024, when BJP-governed states including Haryana made that film tax-free citing its social value.

Kangana Ranaut, who won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat for the BJP in 2024, has continued to act and produce films while serving as an MP — an unusual dual role. Her presence at a Chandigarh screening alongside the Haryana CM, Haryana cabinet ministers, and BJP MPs Rekha Sharma underlines how the film has become part of the party’s cultural outreach, positioning patriotic cinema as a vehicle for public messaging.
