Even My Skin Became a Weapon: Punjab Woman Alleges ₹1.2 Crore Dowry, Abuse and Abandonment by US-Based Husband
An NRI dowry harassment case from Kharar: a woman has alleged ₹1.2 crore in dowry demands, cruelty and abandonment by her US-based husband and mother-in-law.

A woman from a Kharar village in Mohali district of Punjab has accused her US-based husband and mother-in-law of subjecting her to dowry demands, physical cruelty and eventual abandonment — with the alleged abuse, according to her complaint, extending even to mockery over a skin ailment she was being treated for. The police have registered an FIR and begun investigations.
NRI Dowry Harassment Case: The complainant, whose identity North Desk is withholding in line with standard practice in cases of alleged matrimonial cruelty, married Harpreet Singh, on February 9, 2026. In her written complaint to the NRI Affairs Wing of Punjab Police, she stated that she came from a family that had initially harboured reservations about the match, but ultimately agreed to it — moved, in part, by sympathy after learning that the groom’s father had died.
That sympathy, she alleges, was not returned in kind. According to her statement, what followed the wedding was an escalating series of demands from her husband and in-laws: a car worth ₹18 lakh, and jewellery and gold valued at approximately ₹60 lakh. Taken together with other wedding-related expenses, she alleges her family spent close to ₹1.2 crore in the course of the marriage.

NRI Dowry Harassment Case: The complaint alleges that her husband subjected her to repeated physical abuse. In one of the more disturbing details recorded in the FIR, she states that he seized on a boil (“phora”) that had developed on her body — one she says she was actively getting medically treated for — and used it as a recurring pretext to humiliate and demean her, mocking her appearance even as she sought treatment for the condition.
She further alleges that her husband began an extramarital affair during the marriage, after which she was thrown out of the marital home. He subsequently left for the United States, she says, and has since made himself unreachable — changing his phone number and cutting off contact entirely.

Involved with 2 more women
In a further allegation that remains unverified and is presented here strictly as her own claim, the complainant stated that she later came to believe her husband had been involved with two other women prior to this marriage, raising her fear that the pattern she experienced may not have been an isolated one. This portion of her complaint is not corroborated by any other source and should be read as her personal apprehension, not an established fact.
The complainant has sought police protection and recovery of the dowry-related expenses incurred by her family, and has stated in her complaint that she holds her husband and his family responsible should any “untoward incident” befall her — a formulation commonly used in such complaints to place responsibility on the accused for the complainant’s safety going forward.
NRI Dowry Harassment FIR
The FIR has been registered under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 — the provision addressing cruelty by a husband or his relatives — along with Sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy). The named accused are Harpreet Singh and his mother, Harinder Kaur; the complainant’s narrative also references other relatives, though they do not appear as formally named accused in the FIR’s final charge.
It is pertinent to note that the allegations in the FIR are based solely on the complainant’s statement and are yet to be established through investigation.
