A 33-year-old woman from Mohali, has accused her husband — currently residing in New Zealand — of sending her back to India under the promise of an amicable separation, and then cutting off all contact along with his extended family, in a case that has finally led to an FIR after nearly two months of what appears to have been administrative inertia at the local police level.
The complainant has named her 35-year-old husband Inderjit Kumar as the accused in FIR registered last week under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita– the provision dealing with cruelty by a husband or his relatives.
‘You shouldn’t have come to India’
NRI Woman Abandoned: According to her written complaint, the woman had been living with her husband in New Zealand as part of their married life together. On April 29, 2026, she alleges, he sent her back to India.
He told her that he would file for divorce and forward her the papers once she was home. She trusted this. What she says happened next is the part that reads less like a legal dispute and more like a slow, deliberate erasure.

Then his family allegedly did the same. Not just one relative in a moment of anger, she says, but a coordinated silence that spread across the household and beyond it.
When she did manage to get through to some of them, she alleges the response was not concern, or explanation, or even hostility about the marriage itself — it was a question turned back on her: why had she even come to India? As though her return — his decision, by her account — had become her transgression to answer for.
She says her husband’s elder brother, based in Australia, echoed the same line when she reached out to him: that she shouldn’t have come back. Even her own brother, she states, has since stopped speaking to her.

She has alleged in her complaint that this amounts to a deliberate conspiracy — that assurances were given specifically to keep her compliant and out of the way while the family moved to finalize a separation on their own terms, without her having any say or any recourse in the meantime.
She has appealed to authorities to ensure her husband and his family are barred from leaving the country pending investigation.
Two months, and a letter from the DGP’s office
What makes this case notable beyond the marital allegations is the paper trail behind its registration. The woman’s original written application was filed in May 2026 — addressed, per the FIR record, to the chief of NRI Wing, Punjab. For roughly two months, it appears to have gone nowhere at the local station level.
It was only after a letter from the intervention at the top level in the police that the state police were directed to act. The FIR was finally registered last week.
The investigation has now been taken up locally with the accused’s whereabouts abroad noted for a Look Out Circular and coordination with the Interpol desk and senior police officials, per the case file.
The FIR lists Inderjit Kumar, with a permanent address in Goraya, Jalandhar, and a present address recorded simply as “unknown, New Zealand.”
