For a woman who married into hope, the silence must have been the hardest part. An FIR has now been registered against a Canada-based man and his family on charges of cruelty, more than two years after the wedding that was supposed to begin her married life — and instead, by her account, left her waiting by a phone that rarely rang.

NRI Groom Goes Silent : According to her statement, the woman married Gurpreet Singh on February 10, 2024, in an Anand Karaj ceremony conducted according to Sikh rites at Nurpur Bedi. Her parents, she says, gave dowry as per their means and spent roughly ₹30 lakh on the wedding, which was held at a resort in Nurpur Bedi.
Two months later, on April 9, 2024, her husband left for Canada. What was meant to be a temporary separation before she could join him, the FIR suggests, became something far more uncertain. She alleges she was passed back and forth — sent to her in-laws’ home, then back to her parents’ — while, in her words, being subjected to persistent taunting and mental harassment by her husband’s family. She says the strain pushed her toward depression.
Waiting, and Being Blamed for Waiting
NRI Groom Goes Silent : The complaint describes a marriage sustained almost entirely by long-distance promises. She alleges her husband made a threatening remark tied to an unrelated dispute involving his brother. He warned her that if she spoke about it, either she would be blamed, or he would harm himself and have her implicated. For three months after the wedding, she says, she stayed at her parents’ home in Firozpur while things were meant to settle.
Days later, she alleges, she learned her husband was already involved with another woman — a relationship she says his own maternal aunt was aware of. Not long after, she alleges, he began pushing for divorce, using threats she describes as aimed at isolating her from her family and pressuring her into silence.
Two years passed, the FIR states, without her husband returning to India even once. During this period, she says, he neither maintained her financially nor made arrangements for her to join him abroad on a spousal visa.
The FIR was registered under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with cruelty by a husband or his relatives. It names Gurpreet Singh, son of Baldev Singh, originally of Firozpur village, Chamkaur Sahib, and now residing in Canada. The complainant is a resident of Shri Anandpur Sahib district.
A Promise Made, and Then Broken
NRI Groom Goes Silent : Her first attempt to seek help came in August 2025, through a complaint to the Punjab police’s NRI Wing. What followed, according to the FIR, was a settlement of sorts: the in-laws reportedly agreed before the department that they would begin sending her financial support starting September 2025.
For a short while, it seems, there may have been reason to hope the marriage could be salvaged on those terms. But the FIR states that after two months, the payments stopped. No further money came.
Calls, she alleges, went unanswered, and her number was eventually blocked. Repeated attempts to get straight answers from her father-in-law, an uncle, and other relatives yielded nothing but evasive responses, she says adding that no one was willing to give her a clear commitment on any of the terms that had been agreed just months earlier.
That breakdown led her to file a second complaint in May 2026, which the FIR notes specifically cited the violation of the earlier settlement. This time, she says, when she called family members in a final attempt to talk things through, they told her plainly that her husband wanted a divorce.
The FIR, At Last
In her statement, the woman has said she wants strict legal action taken against those she holds responsible, describing herself as someone who only wanted to live respectfully within her marriage and her in-laws’ household — and who instead spent two years absorbing what she calls deliberate mental torment, compounded by a promise of support that was made and then abandoned.
