Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, serving a 20-year sentence for raping two of his disciples, has been granted a 21-day furlough; it’s his 17th temporary release from Sunaria jail since his conviction. He will spend the period at the Sirsa-headquartered Dera, sources said Tuesday.
The date is not incidental. August 25, 2026 marks exactly nine years since a special CBI court in Panchkula convicted him — the same August 25, 2017 on which he was taken into judicial custody.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Furlough: In May, when Ram Rahim walked out on his 16th release — a 30-day parole that coincided with Punjab’s urban local body polls — North Desk’s arithmetic on his temporary-release entitlements noted one thing clearly: with that release, he had exhausted his full 10-week (70-day) parole quota for calendar 2026 under the Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act, 2022. What remained was a separate allowance — three weeks of furlough, still available for the year.
Tuesday’s 21-day furlough is that allowance, cashed in almost to the day the calendar year’s clock resets it. Unlike parole, furlough period counts toward the sentence itself rather than pausing it — a distinction that matters for when his term is deemed complete, and one this desk will return to below.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Furlough: Since his first temporary release — a 1-day parole in October 2020, granted for a medical examination — Ram Rahim’s releases have followed a fairly steady drumbeat: a 12-hour parole in 2021 to see his ailing mother, then a near-annual cycle of furloughs and paroles from 2022 onward, several of them timed strikingly close to elections in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
Tallying the publicly confirmed release periods across all 16 prior occasions puts the cumulative time he has spent outside Sunaria jail since conviction at approximately 435 days — a figure consistent with independent tallies published in late May. Adding Tuesday’s 21-day furlough brings that running total past 456 days free, against roughly 3,287 days elapsed since his conviction on August 25, 2017 — meaning close to 14 per cent of the time since his sentencing has now been spent outside prison.
Parole versus furlough: the distinction that extends the sentence
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Furlough: The legal mechanics matter more than the headline number. Of Ram Rahim’s 17 releases, roughly a dozen have been paroles — periods that do not count toward time served, meaning the clock on his 20-year sentence effectively pauses and his ultimate release date is pushed back by that many days. By this desk’s reckoning, his parole days alone (excluding furloughs) add up to a little over 350 days — nearly a full year added to when his sentence is deemed complete.
Furloughs, by contrast — five of them now, at 21 days each, roughly 105 days in total — count as time served. They shorten nothing extra; they simply relocate where those days are spent.
Put plainly: Ram Rahim has effectively deferred his release date by close to a year through parole alone, on top of whatever sentence remains after the two murder-conspiracy convictions against him were separately overturned on appeal — first in the 2002 Ranjit Singh case (2024) and then in the 2002 Ram Chander Chhatrapati murder case (March 2026). The 20-year rape sentence is now the only conviction that stands.
The pattern that hasn’t changed
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Furlough: Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, have repeatedly objected to the frequency of his releases — objections this desk has documented before, including the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s own 2024 characterisation of successive parole grants as “indulgence.” Tuesday’s furlough breaks no new procedural ground; it is, if anything, the least controversial of his releases in years, simply because it was the allowance already flagged as pending.
What has not changed is the broader arithmetic: nine years into a 20-year sentence, Ram Rahim has spent roughly one year of that time effectively erased from his release clock, and closer to 14 per cent of the calendar span since his conviction outside prison walls altogether.
