Early Punjab Election: Why Sukhbir, Jakhar Are Demanding Early Polls? What’s The Strategy?

Chandigarh, October 29
A coordinated chorus for premature elections has gripped Punjab’s political landscape, with both the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding immediate intervention from the Election Commission to impose the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and conduct early assembly elections.
The simultaneous offensive by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and BJP leader Sunil Jakhar reflects a hardening strategy by the opposition to project an administrative “collapse” under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ahead of the scheduled 2027 polls.

Sukhbir Salvo: ‘Admn Has Collapsed, Hold Early Punjab Election’
Early Punjab Election: Chairing a meeting of SAD constituency in-charges in Chandigarh, SAD chief and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal called on the Election Commission to intervene immediately:
Allegations of Administrative Vacuum: Badal claimed that the state machinery is completely directionless:
“The administration has completely collapsed. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann appears to have abandoned the field and run away. This is why the police, too, seem to be operating on their own. There is no commander left in Punjab. I urge the Election Commission to impose the Model Code of Conduct and hold elections. Only then can Punjab be saved.”
Trigger Incidents: The Akali Dal highlighted recent violent confrontations, targeted shootings, the death of an anti-drug activist in Mansa, and the alleged manhandling of grieving families by police.
Open Alliance Signals: Badal’s call for early polls arrived amid continuing discussions between Akali Dal and BJP central emissaries exploring an electoral reunion.

Jakhar’s Letter to Governor Kataria: Early MCC to Stop Misuse
Early Punjab Election: Aligning with the narrative, BJP leader Sunil Jakhar formally petitioned Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to recommend that the Election Commission advance the imposition of the MCC:
The Abohar Marathon Trigger: Jakhar pointed out that the Punjab administration denied permission for a scheduled anti-drug marathon in Abohar by explicitly citing the “prevailing bad law and order situation.” Jakhar argued that by the government’s own admission, the state cannot secure a public sports event.
Free and Fair Polls at Risk: Jakhar warned that leaving civil and police administration under unchecked state executive control would make free, impartial campaigning impossible, citing attacks on political rallies and recent extortion sprees across border districts.

Why Early Punjab Election Demand Matters Now
1. Electoral Timetable: Punjab is technically due for assembly elections in early 2027. Under Section 15 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, general elections can ordinarily be notified only within six months prior to the expiration of the Assembly’s term, unless the House is dissolved earlier or Governor’s Rule is invoked under Article 356.
2. The “Shadow MCC” Strategy: By asking for the early enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, the opposition aims to strip the ruling AAP of policy announcements, transfers, and development-scheme launches while seeking neutral Central Election Commission oversight over the Punjab Police.
3. AAP’s Pushback: The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has termed the twin calls an admission of panic by traditional rivals who are struggling to find candidates and voters, accusing the BJP and SAD of orchestrating constitutional destabilisation attempts in coordination with the Governor’s office.
What happens now from here will be eagerly watched.
