Jio's Decade in Punjab, Haryana, HP: How 32.8% Market Share Reshaped Region's Telecom Map
TRAI data shows Jio Punjab Haryana HP subscribers reached 2.36 crore by June 2026, a 32.8% regional market share a decade after its 2016 launch.

A decade after Reliance Jio entered India’s telecom market, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s latest figures paint a stark picture of how completely the operator has come to dominate mobile connectivity in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
According to TRAI data, Jio had no reported subscriber base in the three circles as of August 2016. Within a month of its September 2016 launch, it had already signed up 16.5 lakh users. By June 2026, that number had grown to 2.36 crore — a compound annual growth rate of 31.4 per cent over ten years, and a net addition of roughly 2.2 crore subscribers.

That puts Jio’s regional market share at 32.8 per cent of the region’s 7.21 crore mobile connections — 1.17 crore subscribers in Punjab, 82.7 lakh in Haryana, and 36 lakh in Himachal Pradesh, per TRAI’s June 2026 report.
The scale of that dominance becomes clearer against what happened to the operators Jio displaced. State-run BSNL, once a fixture of the region’s telecom landscape, has been reduced to marginal, incremental gains — adding roughly 8,000 subscribers in Himachal Pradesh in a single month this year, according to TRAI figures, even as it continues to add small numbers in Haryana and Punjab too. Jio, meanwhile, led net active mobile subscriber additions in Punjab in June 2026 alone.
Jio’s reach extends beyond mobile. The company has connected over 13 lakh homes and businesses in Punjab, 6.5 lakh in Haryana, and 1.8 lakh in Himachal Pradesh through its JioFiber and JioAirFiber broadband services — making it the region’s leading home broadband provider as well, per company-reported figures.
Nationally, the price collapse behind these numbers is stark: average data costs have fallen from roughly Rs 228 per GB in 2016 to about Rs 7.9 today — a drop of nearly 97 per cent — while monthly per-subscriber data consumption on Jio’s network alone now averages 42.3 GB.
What that means for the region is a telecom market that looks nothing like it did in 2016: cheaper data and near-universal 4G/5G access, but also a market where one operator now controls close to a third of all connections, and where competitors — BSNL in particular — survive on the margins rather than compete for share.
