Mohali, June 5
Dimple had been at her computer when Harjinder Singh Mann walked the five feet separating their cabins and pulled out a knife.
What followed — captured in full by the office CCTV system at SRP Logistics Limited in Phase XI, Mohali — lasted only minutes. By the time colleagues at the packers and movers firm near Bestech Mall realised what was happening and called emergency services, the 29-year-old from Patiala had been stabbed more than 30 times.
She was dead before the night was over.
Harjinder Mann, 29, known to friends as Harry, then turned the same knife on himself.
Both were rushed to Fortis Hospital in critical condition. Dimple was pronounced dead during treatment. Mann remains hospitalised; his condition is reported as critical.
Three Years, Then a Breakup — Then This
Mohali office murder: Police say the two had met at SRP Logistics, where they worked in adjacent cabins for approximately three years. A relationship developed. It ended some time ago.
“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of one-sided affection. When the woman rejected his advances, he attacked her,” a police officer of the concerned Police Station said in an initial statement.
But investigators have since filled in a more complete picture. The two had been in a romantic relationship for over three years before separating. After the breakup, Mann repeatedly sought to reconcile. Dimple was not interested. According to police, he had been in emotional distress for some time before Thursday evening.
On June 4, he arrived at the office with a knife already on him.
Mohali office murder: What the CCTV Shows
The security camera footage of the Mohali office murder, which police are treating as primary evidence, recorded the entire sequence of events. DSP Harsimran Singh Bal told media on Friday said: “Harjinder Singh Mann stabbed Dimple 30 to 35 times while she was working on the computer.”
The FSL team has examined the scene. Forensic reports are awaited. Police received the emergency call on the 112 helpline at approximately 7:40 pm and reached the spot shortly after.
A murder case has been registered at Phase-11 Police Station. Dimple’s parents, who are being informed, are expected to arrive in Mohali; their statements will form the basis of further legal proceedings.
The Accused: Patiala Roots, Parents in the US
Harjinder Mann is originally from Patiala, as was Dimple. At the time of the incident, he was residing at Purab Apartments in Mohali. His parents are settled in the United States, according to police.
CCTV footage is being examined in detail. The FSL team has collected physical evidence from the scene. No arrest has been formally recorded given Mann’s hospitalisation, but police say the case against him is built on video evidence and eyewitness accounts from colleagues present at the office.
A Pattern That Keeps Repeating
Thursday’s Mohali office murder fits a pattern that advocacy groups and criminologists have documented at length across India: a woman ends a relationship, the man cannot accept it, and the violence that follows is framed — even in police FIRs — as “one-sided affection” rather than what it is: the lethal enforcement of control over a woman who chose to leave.
Dimple was killed at her workplace — arguably one of the few spaces where institutional presence and colleagues might have offered some protection. It did not.
The investigation continues, say the police.
